Search for AI character prompts and you'll find lists of one-line descriptions. "A cyberpunk samurai in a neon alley." "A steampunk inventor with goggles." The images look impressive for about five seconds. Then you try to use one in a real project and the problems start. You can't put it on a landing page because it doesn't match your brand. The Six Decisions Behind Every Character Prompt

Every prompt in this article is built on the same six decisions. None of them take design experience, just a minute of thought each. Skip one and the AI fills the gap with the most average option in its training data. Make all six and you get a character that looks intentional.

1. What it is. The character concept and its role, in one line. "A carrier-pigeon courier mascot for a shipping app" tells the AI the species, the wardrobe direction, and the context in a single sentence — and the species choice itself does work, because a carrier pigeon already means delivery. "A cute animal mascot" doesn't.

2. What it looks like. Three things: the body proportions (realistic, stylized, chibi), the overall silhouette (the shape you'd recognize as a solid black outline), and one defining physical feature. A scar, freckles, a crooked smile, an oversized visor. One strong feature does more than five generic ones.

3. What it's wearing. Specific fabrics, fits, and colors, not "casual clothes." The more specific the description, the less the AI invents on its own. "Heathered charcoal quarter-zip fleece" gives the AI one thing to render. "A jacket" gives it ten thousand options.

4. What colors. Two dominant colors plus one or two accents, with hex codes. A palette with that hierarchy reads as designed. Five colors at equal weight read as a muddy mix, which is exactly what the AI produces when you skip this decision and let it pick at random. Brand characters should pull the dominant colors from the brand.

5. What style. Name the rendering direction and describe it in render language, not vibe language. Five directions cover nearly every brand and marketing use case: photoreal, semi-real (painted, between concept art and animation), 3D/CGI, 2D animation, and mascot. Two more things apply to every prompt, but the nice part is you set them once and stop thinking about them:

Background: Neutral or off-white for anything you'll use across multiple contexts. One environmental detail maximum for cinematic/semi-real. More than that and the background competes with the character.

Constraints: No real brand logos, no real-person likenesses, no copyrighted characters. Describe what is strictly off the table so the model doesn't hallucinate a logo or face into the frame.

Weak vs. Strong

Why it works. Photoreal characters fail when the prompt reads like a police report: age, height, hair color, eye color. That gives the AI a checklist of average features and produces a stock photo composite. The single defining feature (the sunglass tan line, the chipped tooth) is what makes a face feel specific rather than generated. And the closing style sentence does the heaviest lifting: "85mm lens, shallow depth of field, natural light from the left" compresses grain, color temperature, and contrast into photography shorthand the model already understands from its training data.

What this looks like in practice. You need a character for a DTC coffee brand's campaign. You describe a woman in her early 30s, deep smile lines, wearing a chunky knit sweater, holding a mug in both hands, seated at a scarred wooden table. Morning light from a window to her left, warm tones, shallow depth of field. The AI produces someone who looks like she lives in that scene. Semi-Real (Cinematic)

Best for campaign hero images, brand storytelling, ad concepts, pitch decks. This is the painted, stylized look that sits between concept art and animation. Not photorealistic.

Why it works. Semi-real characters live on narrative implication. The viewer should feel like something just happened or is about to. "Standing in a taproom" is a pose. The style sentence borrows from how film directors communicate: lighting, grade, frame. AI models respond to this language because their training data includes millions of film stills tagged with it. 3D / CGI
