Type "modern minimalist logo for a coffee shop" into an AI image generator and you'll get back something that looks like clipart from 2012, usually with the shop's name spelled "COFFEE SHCP" in a font no one chose. Two problems are happening at once. First, AI image models are famously bad at rendering text, and a logo is one of the few images where a single wrong letter ruins everything. Second, "modern" and "minimalist" are opinions, not instructions — the model has no idea what you mean, so it averages together every logo it's ever seen and hands you the most generic possible result.
There's also a third thing nobody tells you upfront: even a great AI logo generation is a concept, not a finished logo. It comes out as a raster image (pixels), and real logos are vectors (math) so they stay sharp at any size. That sounds like a dealbreaker. It isn't — the workflow at the end of this post handles it. But it changes how you should use these prompts: you're using AI to do the expensive part of logo design (exploring fifty directions to find one worth committing to), then doing a short cleanup pass to make the winner production-ready.

The Six Decisions Behind Every Logo Prompt
Before you write a single prompt, make these six decisions. Every weak AI logo traces back to skipping one of them and letting the model decide for you. As we cover in the course: every detail you leave out is a creative decision you're handing to the algorithm.
- Logo type — Icon-only mark, wordmark (the name is the logo), combination mark (icon + name), badge/emblem, monogram, or mascot. This is the biggest decision and the one most people never make. Each type needs a different prompt, which is why the prompts below are organized by type.
- Style language — The words that keep output looking like a logo instead of an illustration: "flat vector logo," "simple geometric shapes," "clean lines," "solid colors." Without these, models drift toward photorealism, gradients, and 3D rendering — all of which read as AI-generated and fall apart at small sizes.
- The concept — What the mark actually depicts. One idea, not three. "A fox" works. "A fox holding a key in front of a mountain at sunrise" is a children's book cover.
- Color — Two or three colors, named specifically: "deep navy and warm gold," "forest green and off-white." Hex codes help if you have brand colors already. Leave color unspecified and you'll get a different palette every generation, which makes comparing concepts impossible.
- Background and format — "Isolated on a plain white background, centered, square composition." Always. A logo floating on a gradient scene can't be evaluated or extracted.
- What to exclude — Tell the model what not to do: "no gradients, no 3D, no drop shadows, no photorealism, no text." That last one matters more than the rest — more on it in a second.
Weak vs. Strong
Weak: "Modern minimalist logo for a coffee shop, professional, high quality."
Every word here is an opinion. "Modern," "professional," and "high quality" mean nothing to an image model — it has no concept of quality, only of visual patterns. This prompt hands all six decisions to the algorithm.
Strong: "Flat vector logo mark for a coffee shop: a single coffee bean formed by two interlocking crescent shapes, simple geometric construction, deep espresso brown and cream, isolated on a plain white background, centered, no text, no gradients, no 3D effects, no shadows."
Same coffee shop. But now the type is decided (icon-only), the concept is one idea (interlocking crescents forming a bean), the style language keeps it flat and geometric, the colors are named, the background is clean, and the exclusions block every common failure mode.
Solve the Text Problem First
AI-mangled text is the number one reason people give up on AI logos. Here's the honest answer: for most logos, don't ask the AI to render your business name at all.
Option A (recommended): generate the icon, add the name yourself. Prompt for an icon-only mark with "no text" in the exclusions. Then place your business name next to it in real type using Canva, Figma, or any design tool — pick an actual font, kern it properly, and own the result. This is how most professional combination marks are built anyway: the icon and the type are separate elements. It also sidesteps an ownership issue we'll get to at the end.
Option B: use a text-strong model and keep it short. If you want the AI to render the name — say, for a wordmark or a badge — the 2026 models can finally do it, but accuracy drops with length. Put the exact text in quotes ("the text reads exactly 'NORTH & PINE'"), keep it under three words, and expect to regenerate a few times. When a generation is close but not right, resist rewriting the whole prompt. Keep everything identical and change exactly one thing — the same iteration discipline we teach for every kind of AI generation, because it's the only way to know what caused the improvement.
- Wrong feel, right concept → change only the style language ("flat vector" → "minimal line art")
- Right mark, wrong palette → change only the colors
- Too busy → add to the exclusions ("no fine detail, maximum three shapes")

From AI Concept to Usable Logo File
You've got a winner. It's still a PNG. Here's the path to something you can actually put on a website, an invoice, and a storefront:

Copyright: not for pure AI output. Under current US Copyright Office rules, an image generated entirely by AI doesn't qualify for copyright — copyright requires human authorship, and the Supreme Court declined to revisit that in early 2026. Practically, this means a raw AI generation can't be exclusively yours the way a designer's original work would be.
